How long is the two-week wait after IVF?

It is usually shorter than two weeks. Most clinics test 9 to 11 days after a day-5 transfer and 11 to 14 days after a day-3 transfer, because the embryo is already several days old at transfer.

What does DP5DT mean?

DP5DT means 'days past 5-day transfer'. So 7DP5DT is the seventh day after a day-5 blastocyst was transferred. DP3DT is the same idea for a day-3 embryo.

When is the earliest I can take a home test?

A sensitive home test can pick up hCG from around 5 to 6 days past a day-5 transfer, but early results are unreliable and can be affected by a trigger shot. Around 9 days past a day-5 transfer is the earliest most people get a result they can trust.

Can a trigger shot cause a false positive?

Yes. An hCG trigger shot can remain detectable for roughly 10 to 14 days, so a positive home test in the first week after transfer may be residual trigger rather than pregnancy.

What if my home test is negative but the beta is positive?

This happens. Blood tests detect much lower hCG levels than urine tests, so a blood test can be positive while a home test still reads negative. Your clinic's beta result is the one that counts.

Does implantation happen at the same time for everyone?

No. After a day-5 transfer implantation usually begins within 1 to 3 days, but the timing varies and there are no symptoms that reliably indicate it either way.

Are two-week-wait symptoms meaningful?

Generally not. Progesterone support produces sore breasts, cramping, tiredness and bloating whether or not an embryo implanted, which is why symptom-spotting is so unreliable in an IVF cycle.

Why the IVF wait is shorter than two weeks

In a natural cycle the two-week wait runs from ovulation to a missed period. After IVF the embryo is already three, five or six days old when it is transferred, so the clock is already part-way through. That is why a day-5 transfer is usually tested around nine days later rather than fourteen — and why a day-3 transfer waits about two days longer than a day-5 for the same result.

Reading the DPT vocabulary

Clinics and forums count in days past transfer: 7DP5DT is seven days after a day-5 transfer. Adding the embryo age gives the equivalent days past ovulation — 7DP5DT is roughly 12 days past ovulation — which is how the IVF timeline lines up with a natural cycle.

About early testing

Testing early is common and understandable, but before about 9DP5DT a negative means very little and a positive may still be trigger shot. If you do test early, plan in advance what you will do with an ambiguous result — that is usually harder than the test itself.

After a positive beta
